Germany invaded France in 1940, beginning Nazi occupation of France during World War II. Jeanne Laurence, a schoolteacher in Vernon, France, published a newspaper column “Tribune Féminine” in the local newspaper for the French Resistance, La Porte Normande, in which she voiced concerns and viewpoints relevant to everyday women of the region, including the war, women’s rights, and feminism in France.

Ali Benbrik: Mémoire

Research and Film in Progress

In an unpublished memoir, Ali Benbrik describes his childhood in Nazi Germany. His German mother and her relatives died in World War II bombings. His Arab-African father had been arrested by the SS and then taken to France. Around 7 years old, Ali and his 9-year-old sister were sent to an orphanage in Germany and eventually to France. The memoir will eventually take the form of a visual narrative. More information on the Benbrik ancestry can be found at the Diverging Fates Project (link below).
